This was formerly one of the villas owned by the ruler of Takayama Castle, Lord Kanamori. However, after Hida came under the direct control of the Tokugawa Shogunate, this was used as a government office for officials dispatched from Edo (present day Tokyo). This is the only building of its kind that remains standing today in Japan.
