Kotokuji Temple

Kotokuji Temple

NANTO City

This Pureland Buddhist temple was originally built in the third year of the Bunmei Era (1471). Every year on April 25th and 26th, on the anniversary of Rennyo's death, beginning with Rennyo's own composition, Golden Amida Buddha, there is an exhibit of authentic writings, treasured items and portraits transmitted from his era. There is also a collection of works on display by woodcut artist Shiko Munakata, who happened to have a close relationship with the 18th head priest at the temple. Inside, the array of 6 fusuma (sliding screens) decorated with bold, magnificent pine trees, entitled Kegonmatsu, is also a must-see. It is said to be Munakata's greatest masterpiece.
